"Sir, how do I get my first hotel job?" Every results season, this is the message I receive most from hospitality students. The degree is done, industrial training is complete, and suddenly the job search feels confusing.

For 18 years I have worked in hospitality, first in hotels, then as an educator in Dehradun, and today in recruitment for India, the Gulf and Europe. I was honoured with the Excellence in Hospitality Sector of Uttarakhand award in January 2023 by Shri Dhan Singh Rawat ji, and with the Uttarakhand Ratan Samman 2023 by Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari ji, former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and former Governor of Maharashtra. Those moments reminded me that my real work is helping young people begin their careers safely. Here is the advice I share with my students.

Why the First Job Shapes Your Whole Career

The first property you join teaches you standards, grooming, teamwork and how to handle guests. It also gives you the experience letter that overseas employers ask for later. Choose the place where you will learn the most, not only the one that pays a little more.

Five Steps to Your First Hotel Job

Step 1: Choose a starting department

Recruiters struggle to place a fresher who wants "anything." Pick one area that matches your training: front office (guest service agent, reservations), F&B service (associate, steward, banquets), food production (commis or kitchen trainee) or housekeeping (room attendant, public area). You can switch later.

Step 2: Keep your CV to one clean page

Add your contact details, the role you want, your qualification and institute, industrial training with hotel names and dates, languages, software you have used and any college competitions or event work. Skip long objectives and unrelated hobbies. Honest and simple beats padded.

Step 3: Get interview-ready

Fresher interviews test attitude as much as knowledge. Prepare for "Tell me about yourself," "Why this department?" and "How would you handle an upset guest?" Dress neatly, arrive early, speak calmly, research the hotel's outlets and brand, and show you are ready for shifts and weekends.

Step 4: Apply only through verified channels

A WhatsApp message promising a five-star job without an interview is a risk, not a shortcut. Use official hotel careers pages, your placement cell, or a dedicated hospitality recruitment platform. I created hospitalityvacancy.com so freshers and experienced staff can find hotel jobs across India, the Gulf and Europe in one trusted place. Never pay for a job before a genuine interview and a written offer.

Step 5: Plan two years ahead

Dreaming of Dubai or Europe? One or two solid years in a good Indian hotel, a strong experience letter and better English will make you a far stronger overseas candidate.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sending one generic CV everywhere
  • Arriving late or poorly groomed for interviews
  • Rejecting a strong learning role over a small salary difference
  • Quitting within weeks without notice or an experience letter
  • Believing offers that demand money upfront
